New Year’s Day One

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Your last hurrah just happened to be New Year’s Eve.

So maybe it was a gentle one at home or possibly you went all out. Either way you just woke up and you told yourself this was going to be day one.

Get yourself a nice tall glass of water and have a seat. This moment is crucial as you’re either going to take yourself and your situation seriously or you’re going to turn around and say “forget it“ in disbelief.

How many times have you been at this juncture before? But this time it’s different.. so what next? Get out a pen and paper write down what is important to you. What are the things and people in your life that you cannot live without? What are the hopes and dreams that you have been working towards? What are the hopes and dreams that you have not been working towards?

How does alcohol and other drugs fit into the picture?

Make a list of all the good things about using alcohol or other drugs and next to it, a list of all the not so good things about using alcohol or other drugs. On another sheet of paper, write down what are all the good things about stopping the use of alcohol and drugs and what are the not so good things about stopping the use of alcohol and other drugs.

Basically you want to dig into why it is that you want to change whatever it is you’ve been doing.

What pain has your use of alcohol or other drugs caused you? I encourage you to think about all the times you’ve “gotten away with it“ and have not experienced any negative consequences. Maybe someone covered up for you or took care of something that you were unable to.. This is called enabling. Any kind of “close call“ would definitely be worthy of being listed as well.

It’s not all going to come to you in the first five or ten minutes but you wanna keep adding to it as things come to mind throughout the day. You’ll be adding to this list for a while…

How do you feel about your decision now? What’s the likeliness of you taking this seriously?

It’s a new day, a new month and the new year! What would you like it to look like? I would encourage you to start a clean sheet of paper for this one. Looking at what we DO Want is a wonderful start to the New Year.
